City Council Wrap-Up January 4, 2017

At Wednesday’s Special Called Meeting, Tucker City Council heard presentations and held discussion on several issues that will come back up for votes in the near future.

One such item was an application for annexation filed by the owners of six commercial properties along Parklake Drive just inside the Perimeter. These businesses are the latest in a growing number of commercial and residential property owners looking to become a part of the City of Tucker. This application was presented on a first reading, meaning City Council will cast a final vote on this annexation at an upcoming meeting.

Councilmembers also discussed new protocols that would set more stringent parameters on communication between developers and members of Tucker’s Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Council indicated strong support for the changes, but asked for some re-wording in the proposed policy.

There was also discussion surrounding the creation of a Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Much of the debate centered around the geographic area that the Tucker DDA would encompass. Councilmembers asked for additional information from the city attorney and decided to revisit the issue at a later meeting.

Council did act on a few items, including approving a one-year lease renewal for the City Hall building. They also unanimously approved a resolution that seeks to set forth enhanced building standards for future construction based on building height and size. In the event of a fire, these new standards would improve firefighter safety, better protect property and help the public welfare. The proposed ordinance to amend the city Building Code will now go to the state for a required review.

Additionally, Council voted to give final approval to an ordinance creating the Office of the Solicitor. City Attorney Brian Anderson will oversee the Office of the Solicitor. With Tucker’s court being held temporarily in Clarkston, that city’s solicitor will serve in the same capacity for Tucker. Court is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
