SPLOST Resurfacing to Begin Around Tucker Next Week

TUCKER, Ga. (August 9, 2018) – The first of Tucker’s road resurfacing projects funded by special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST) funds will begin Wednesday on Thornridge Lane. Over the remainder of August, eight other streets that rated among the worst conditioned in Tucker will be resurfaced, with 14 others on the schedule by year’s end.

These projects were made possible last November when voters across DeKalb County overwhelmingly supported the additional penny sales tax for road and drainage improvements, multi-modal transportation initiatives, parks and recreation needs, as well as public safety upgrades. The City of Tucker is projected to receive $32 million over the six-year life of the SPLOST.

“Knowing that voters may approve the SPLOST, we began planning for this more than a year ago,” said City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt, who is overseeing Tucker’s SPLOST-funded resurfacing projects. “Because of that preparation and because of the guidance of our Mayor and City Council, we are ready to put those pennies to work to make a difference for Tucker’s drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

A key component of the resurfacing projects will be communicating with residents and drivers in the affected areas ahead of time to let them know that traffic could be temporarily impacted. The City is prepared to use its full Communications platform to keep people informed.

“The good news is traffic on some of these projects will be impacted for a few hours, on others a few days,” explained City Communications Director Matt Holmes. “We will have signage along these routes, along with utilizing our website, email list and social media channels to let people know that work is coming. Ultimately, we think these short disruptions will pay off over the long term.”

A tentative schedule for the August resurfacing projects is posted below. These dates are subject to change based on weather conditions and other unexpected factors. Projects listed that do not have a date are scheduled for completion by December 2018.
