Fellowship Road Traffic Pattern Change Complete

TUCKER, Ga. (December 18, 2018) – The City of Tucker Monday made good on its promise to address traffic concerns at a busy downtown intersection. Crews completed work to add a southbound lane on Fellowship Road on the northside of the intersection with Lawrenceville Highway. Cars going northbound on Fellowship at that intersection will now have one through lane, rather than two.

“This is an important change that folks asked for,” explains City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt. “They had complained about traffic backups and unsafe driving practices. As part of an intersection safety analysis, we looked at this specific intersection and the engineering data backed up the idea of making this traffic pattern change.”

Drivers heading south on Fellowship toward Lawrenceville will now have three lanes once they pass under the railroad bridge: a left turn only lane, a straight lane and a right turn only lane. Northbound drivers will see their one lane expand to two once they pass under the railroad bridge in the other direction. As drivers grow accustomed to this new traffic pattern, there will be temporary signage in place to alert them to the changes.

“We hope that drivers will help spread the word to their friends and neighbors about the changes taking place,” said Superintendent Sam Durrance. “It’s always a challenge when you alter a traffic pattern that folks have been driving for years. So, the more this is brought to folks’ attention, the better it will be for everyone.”

The change in traffic pattern comes on the heels of a SPLOST-funded resurfacing of Fellowship Road from Chamblee-Tucker Road to Idlewood Road. The SPLOST (Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax) is a penny tax that was approved by voters in Tucker and across DeKalb County in November 2017. It is projected to generate around $32 million over six years for projects in the City of Tucker. The City is on pace to complete nearly two dozen SPLOST-funded road resurfacing projects in the 2018 calendar year. For more details, visit www.tuckerga.gov/SPLOST.
