Tucker Unveils SPLOST-Funded Resurfacings for Spring 2019

TUCKER, Ga. (February 14, 2019) – The City of Tucker is gearing up for a new round of road resurfacing projects paid for largely by the special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST). In 2018, the City was able to resurface 21 of the most poorly-conditioned streets. This new list calls for an additional two dozen roads to be repaved.

“We are very excited about getting these resurfacing projects started as soon as weather permits,” said City Engineer Ken Hildebrandt. “While there are streets throughout the City that could use resurfacing, the 24 we’ve identified for this phase are truly in need. These projects are going to make a difference in the daily lives of drivers all over Tucker.”

This week, Tucker’s City Council approved the $2.3 million project, which will be overseen by Atlanta Paving. Crews will address two roads left over from the 2018 resurfacing effort – Old Norcross Road and Rock Mountain Boulevard – as well as 24 others, mostly residential, which rated poorly on a pavement condition analysis commissioned by the City last winter.

“There were lessons learned with our first-ever road resurfacing campaign last fall,” said City Manager Tami Hanlin. “One of those lessons is that bad weather can really set you back. As a result, we are going to get as much work done this spring and summer as we can, rather than waiting for the fall.

“The other lesson is that with proper oversight, you can control costs and keep a project under budget. Our staff worked diligently with Atlanta Paving to ensure that we were getting quality work, while avoiding any cost overruns. We are committed to seeing those same results in 2019.”

The SPLOST was passed by DeKalb County voters in November 2017 by a wide margin. The additional penny tax is expected to raise $31.8 million for projects in the City of Tucker over the next six years. Residents can keep up with how SPLOST money is being spent in the City at tuckerga.gov/SPLOST.
