City Council Wrap Up – November 13, 2017

Tucker’s City Council met Monday night at the City Hall Annex for the first of two scheduled meetings in the month of November.

The major issue on the agenda was a second read and public hearing of an ordinance to approve a rezoning for a 19-unit single family development on Saren Court. Council unanimously granted the project a deferral at the developer’s request. The issue will come back up for a second read and expected vote on November 27.

Council entertained several items of new business at the meeting. They held a first read of an ordinance that would prescribe rules and regulations for collection of garbage and refuse, as well as the unlawful deposit of litter in the City. They also held a first read on changes to the building regulations code that would help the City deal with property owners who are in violation and whose properties will need City abatement. This would apply to ongoing code enforcement citations involving cases such as overgrown properties that are not responding to environmental court. Additionally, Council held a first read on an annexation petition by a group of five commercial properties along East Ponce de Leon Avenue near Beverage Drive. This annexation is expected to pass on a final vote in December.

Early in the meeting, City Manager Tami Hanlin presented an update on the SPLOST referendum to the City Council. The additional penny tax, which passed by a wide margin on Election Day, will begin to be collected in April 2018, with the City receiving funds monthly beginning the following month.

At the end of the meeting, Council went into executive session, where they decided that the City will notify DeKalb County of their intention to take over operations of Tucker Recreation Center on January 1, 2018.

The next meeting of the City Council is scheduled for November 27 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall Annex.
