TUCKER, Ga. (March 12, 2020) – Out of an abundance of caution, the City of Tucker announced Thursday that the Tucker Chili Cook-off is being postponed amid the coronavirus outbreak. The Cook-off, now in its ninth year of operation, will be moved to a later date.
“I was really hoping we would be able to pull it off, but after much discussion we have decided to err on the side of caution and postpone,” said Chili Cook-off organizer Jamey Wilson. “This was not an easy decision for us to make, but this event attracts thousands of people and it just didn’t seem worth risking people’s health.”
The Chili Cook-off annually draws thousands to Tucker’s Main Street. It is organized by a group of local business leaders under the umbrella of the Old Town Tucker Merchants Association (OTTMA).
Meantime, the Tucker Parks and Recreation Department is altering details for its popular Pi Day Pie-K. The fun-run, which takes place on March 14 to celebrate the mathematical pi, has participants run or walk 3.14 kilometers. It originally promised participants some post-run pizza pie from event sponsor Papa John’s, but due to virus concerns no food will be served after the race.
“We know that people are going to be disappointed, but safety is always our top priority,” said Tucker Recreation Leader Crystal Dawson. “So, once concerns about the virus blow over, we’ll be encouraging our Pi Day participants to join us for a Papa John’s pizza party.
“On Saturday, if you’re not feeling well or are concerned about running with a group, we want to invite you to use a running app to log 3.14 kilometers on your own. You can take a picture, post it to social media and feel like you were there. Then make sure to join us at a later date to enjoy that pizza party to celebrate Pi Day.”
The Pi Day Pie-K debuted last year and had nearly 100 participants lined up outside of Tucker Recreation Center to run or walk. This year’s event will feature two heats; one beginning at 8 a.m. and the other at 10 a.m. For more information on either of the postponed events, go to www.tuckerchilicookoff.com or www.tuckerga.gov/parks.
