Lake Erin Dam at Henderson Park

Lake Erin Dam at Henderson Park

Overview

Project Overview

Lake Erin Dam is a Category 1 dam according to criteria established by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s Safe Dams Program. Under DeKalb County’s maintenance responsibility, staff has received copies of inspection reports noting deficiencies in the dam dating as far back as 2010. Following the assumption of Public Works maintenance responsibilities in July of 2023, and after the approval of the Intergovernmental Agreement with DeKalb County, the City of Tucker has an increased sense of urgency to bring the Lake Erin Dam into compliance.

DESCRIPTION:

AECOM has performed all of the previous site surveys, hydraulic & hydrologic study, spillway alternatives analysis, and monthly inspections. Now that the design is complete, and a construction bid had been awarded, work will begin in early 2025. This project will include a new outlet structure, spillway, and dam to comply with the Environmental Protection Division’s Safe Dams requirements.

Construction Progress for Henderson Park’s Lake Erin Dam Project

Construction is ongoing; however, progress has been hampered by weather during an extremely wet winter. The moisture content of the soil must meet industry standards to be able to provide proper compaction and a safe dam structure. Weather permitting, the construction should be substantially completed in late spring. We apologize for any inconvenience. Safety was the impetus of the project and continues to be.

At the City Council meeting on March 9, 2026, the Mayor and Council awarded Cooper Carry a contract to complete the Henderson Park Master. The proposal includes a robust public engagement plan to develop this jewel of park to the needs of the community.
