INTRODUCTION TO ANNEXATION

WHAT IS ANNEXATION?
Annexation is the legal process of adding a new area to a city’s boundaries and jurisdiction, making the area part of the city. Following annexation, specified municipal services would be provided by the City of Tucker.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE ON YOUR BALLOT
Official Ballot Question: “Shall the Act which annexes certain land into the City of Tucker be approved?”

WHAT THIS VOTE MEANS FOR YOU

  • A “YES” Vote would approve the annexation and place the area within the City of Tucker.
  • A “NO” Vote would not approve the annexation, and would remain part of unincorporated DeKalb County.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES AND GOVERNANCE FOLLOWING ANNEXATION

  • Paving streets and building or repairing sidewalks would be provided by the City of Tucker.
  • Annexation would integrate your neighborhood into Tucker’s transportation plan to secure funding for connected trail networks and safer commutes.
  • Becoming part of Tucker would transfer responsibility for local park planning and facility investments to the city.
  • Residents would be eligible to vote in City of Tucker elections and communicate with city officials regarding municipal matters as citizens of Tucker.
  • City personnel would conduct safety inspections and enforce applicable property-maintenance codes on apartments.

  • Tucker Code Enforcement prioritized rapid response times this year, addressing 73% of reported cases on the same day
  • Open 62 hours a week, the Tucker Recreation Center welcomed over 36,000 visitors last year
  • Community sports programming drew more than 1,900 active participants last year in Tucker
  • More than 1,750 kids took part in City of Tucker Youth Camps over the past year

Annexation Process in Georgia:

Local Act of the General Assembly and Referendum
This method requires a question to appear on the ballots of residents of the proposed annexation area, asking them to vote “yes” or “no” on annexation. The outcome of this vote will decide whether the defined area becomes part of the city. This November, voters who reside in the annexation area will have the opportunity to choose for themselves whether they want to join the city.

Ballot Information: On the November 3rd election ballot, residents in the proposed annexation area will vote on whether to approve or deny the effort.

Legislation and Voting Information

Legislative Overview

Supported by local DeKalb lawmakers, including Senators Kim Jackson, Tonya Anderson, Sally Harrell and Elena Parent, as well as Representatives Karla Drenner, Imani Barnes, Billy Mitchell, Scott Holcomb and Viola Davis, SB 622 passed during the 2026 Georgia General Assembly session. This effort by the local delegation ensures the annexation plan is brought directly before the residents of unincorporated DeKalb County in the proposed area for a vote.

  • Voter Registration Deadline to Vote on Annexation is October 5, 2026
  • Early Voting: October 13 – October 30
  • Election Day: November 3, 2026

Q: How do I know if I am eligible to vote in this referendum?

A: Only registered voters who physically reside within the proposed SB 622 annexation boundary lines are eligible to vote on this ballot measure. Check your ballot to see if you are eligible.

If you believe your address is within the annexation boundaries but SB 622 does not appear on your ballot, please contact the City of Tucker or the DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections office immediately.

Q: Why does my mail already say “Tucker” if I am in unincorporated DeKalb County?

A: The U.S. Postal Service assigns mailing names based on regional mail distribution hubs rather than official municipal boundaries. The postal designation “Tucker” does not by itself mean that a property is located within the incorporated City of Tucker.

Q: Will annexation cause any issues or delays with my mail delivery?

A: No, absolutely not. Mail delivery is operated independently by the federal U.S. Postal Service. Annexation changes municipal governance and services, but it has zero impact on postal carrier routes, sorting facilities or daily mail delivery.

Q: Will my emergency services or 911 response change?

A: No. Emergency services will remain completely uninterrupted. You will continue to call 911 just as you do today.

Q: Will annexation change my child’s public school district?

A: No. Public schools in the area would remain under the jurisdiction of the DeKalb County School District. City boundary lines do not change school attendance zones or school system operations.
