August 2026 City Council Recap

Tucker’s Mayor and Council had fairly light agendas this month despite holding only one meeting in July.

In the first meeting on August 10, the following was approved via the consent agenda:

• A contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation for a time extension for the intersection improvements at Hugh Howell Road and Mountain Industrial Boulevard
• A contract for tennis court improvements at Rosenfeld Park
• Two contracts for multiple stormwater repair projects Mayor Lerner completed her appointments for the Tucker Development Authority with the approval to appoint Khanan Teyf.

The Mayor and Council approved a request for emergency funding to repair a growing sink hole on Windsong Way. City staff worked fast once alerted to the safety concerns and the repair has since been completed.

The City’s update to the Transportation and Trails Master Plan was approved to amend the Comprehensive Plan that was adopted in 2023.

In new business the Mayor and Council heard the first read for two ordinances. One to consider a 12-month extension of a SLUP that was approved in July of 2022, and the other concerning an amendment to the City Code to align with State Code regarding animals and litter regulation.

As a last order of business, the Mayor and Council unanimously approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with DeKalb County to acquire property from DeKalb County at 4345 Cowan Road for the purposes of recreation and other purposes.

In the second meeting of August the Mayor and Council met for a work session. A special group led the Pledge of Allegiance, representatives from the ARTucker event and the winner of the middle school art contest, Oliver Weaver, pictured with his mother, Councilmember Alexis Weaver.

DeKalb County School District Interim Superintendent Dr. Norman Sauce III presented an update on the start of the school year and DCSD staff presented on the renewed Student Assignment effort. The Council was excited to learn that the student population in the overall Tucker Cluster is growing, illustrating people’s confidence in our cluster and our city. Public engagement opportunities for input on SAP for the Tucker Cluster starts in September. Please reference their website dekalbschoolsga.org/SAP for details and dates.

The Mayor took some time to highlight the partnership between the school district and the City. She, Council and City staff are often in the schools, helping with educating on local government, partnering with students on STEM projects and the inaugural year of the Mayor’s Book Club.

City staff then presented on the Lawrenceville Highway Improvements and streetscape standards, seeking feedback and guidance from the Mayor and Council on how they would like to see the City move forward with decisions on project scope and updates to our City Code.

Following the presentations and lively discussion, the Mayor and Council received the monthly financial report and upcoming agenda items.
