City Council Wrap Up – 6.8.26

Tucker’s Mayor and Council met for the first meeting of the month on the second Monday. In addition to the regular scheduled meeting, the City held two special-called meetings for the purpose of allowing public hearings for the proposed millage rate. The Mayor and Council are proposing to maintain the millage rate at 2.036. Because DeKalb County assessed the collective property values at a higher value, the City’s tax digest will increase, and it is a requirement to advertise it as a tax increase. The City held public hearings at 11 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. on June 8 and have scheduled the third and final hearing during the June 22 meeting at City Hall.

The City of Tucker recognized Pride Month and declared June Tucker Pride Month.

The Mayor and Council presented three proclamations. For the first time, the City recognized Pride Month and declared June Tucker Pride Month. Councilmembers and many residents celebrated the proclamation as a landmark moment in the City. Continuing in firsts for the City, the Mayor and Council designated June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day and presented the proclamation to Camille Mahdi who organizes Tucker’s annual Juneteenth Jubilee which will be at Northlake Mall this Saturday June 13. The last proclamation recognized June 8-12 as Municipal Court Clerks Week.

There were 12 items on the consent agenda consisting mostly of contracts, the meeting minutes from the previous month and an amendment to the FY26 budget. The consent agenda was approved with a unanimous vote.

Seven public hearings followed. Three were first reads, two were second reads with voting and two were votes on resolutions.

First Reads

  • A Special Land Use Permit to allow a child daycare facility for up to six children at a home located at 2372 Midvale Circle
  • A SLUP to allow additional building height at 4985 Lavista Road for applicant JW Tucker LLC (JW Collection)
  • A zoning modification, a SLUP to allow a drive-thru facility and a concurrent variance to setback regulations at 4270 Lawrenceville Hwy for Rocket Brew

Second Reads

  • A unanimous approval on a SLUP for a drive-thru facility at 4453 Hugh Howell Road for a Whataburger
  • A unanimous vote of approval on the proposed budget as amended for fiscal year 2027. Councilmember Weaver proposed an amendment to the budget to move funding within the 10 year CIP from the Hugh Howell Improvement line item in 2028 for $1 million and 2029 for half a million dollars to the Southfork Peachtree Creek Greenway Trail. The amendment failed 5-2. Councilmember Trocchi then proposed to amend the CIP to move $500,000 from the Hugh Howell Improvement line item in 2028 to the Southfork Peachtree Creek Greenway Trail for construction. The amendment passed 4-3.

Resolutions

  • Unanimous vote to create Streetlight District 2026-003 for the property at 5830 East Ponce de Leon Ave
  • Unanimous vote to create Streetlight District 2026-002 for the property at 3766 Lawrenceville Hwy

The last item of business was unanimously approved to contract KCI Technologies, Inc for an ADA Transition Plan Strategy.

The Mayor and Council then recessed for executive session for the purposes of personnel, real estate and litigation and returned without action to adjourn.
