Statement from Mayor Frank Auman on This Morning's SWAT Standoff

“Around 3 o’clock this morning, someone decided to try and rob the Waffle House on Lawrenceville Highway. He then fled to the Knights Inn motel across the street, leading to a standoff with police that lasted several hours. Eventually, the standoff was resolved peacefully, and three people were arrested.

“I want to thank our partners with DeKalb County Police for their excellent work in this situation. They were able to locate the suspect, surround him and ensure that no one was hurt in the course of the operation. It’s worth noting that because of the availability of these special SWAT and other units, regular police work in Tucker was not disrupted during the standoff. The DeKalb Police Department continues to provide our residents and businesses with a superior level of service and for that we are grateful.

“I also want to recognize the efforts of the staff and membership at Rehoboth Baptist Church. They got a call early this morning that a lot of families had been evacuated from the motel because of the standoff. They immediately went to work securing clothing and toiletries, while teaming up with the Waffle House to make sure these families had a good breakfast. Pastor Bush and his team continue to exemplify Tucker’s spirit of loving your neighbor as yourself. They truly shined a light during an otherwise dark situation.”
